ABOUT AL DENSON

BACKGROUND

​Alfred “AL” Denson, native of Jacksonville, FL and graduate of the Florida A&M University. A Rattler through and through, who bleeds orange and green. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education in 1964. Mr. Al Denson, a proud alumnus from New Stanton High School, where he made his mark and excelled in football, basketball, and track and field.

A CAREER IN THE FOOTBALL LEAGUE

Mr. Al Denson was an outstanding student athlete earning the honors as an All-American. After years of playing college ball, he would be drafted into the then American Football League and sign with the Denver Broncos. Mr. Denson would play four positions: flanker, tight end, split end, and wide receiver for eight seasons with the Broncos, one year with the Minnesota Vikings and Oakland Raiders. During his professional football career, Mr. Denson earned ALL-PRO honors three years: 1967, 1968, and 1969.

LIFE AFTER FOOTBALL

After retiring from the NFL, he would become an entrepreneur owning and operating Denson Gulf Gas Station while working for Duval County Public Schools as a physical education teacher and coach. In 1981, Mr. Denson was inducted into the FAMU Sports Hall of Fame for Football. Lastly, Mr. Denson was the first African-American in Jacksonville, FL to launch a grocery store, MAGIC CITY FOODS, INC located at 4750 Soutel Dr. After years of giving back to the community, his daughters wanted to continue his legacy and founded the Al Denson Foundation, Inc. a non-profit 501(c)3 organization whose mission is to provide student-athletes with scholarships attending historically black colleges and universities.
